01

What a full refit covers

A complete bathroom replacement usually starts by stripping the room back to bare walls and floor. Old pipework is checked and rerouted where the new layout needs it, walls are made good, and then the new suite, tiling or panelling, flooring and lighting go in. A written quote should list each of these stages separately, so you can see exactly what is included and compare it fairly with any other price you have.

02

Choosing the suite

The suite is the bath or shower, basin and toilet. Wall-hung basins and toilets make a small floor look bigger and are easier to clean around. Close-coupled toilets are simpler and cheaper. Basin units with drawers hide clutter well in a family bathroom. Choose taps and a shower that suit your water pressure; a combi boiler and a hot-water cylinder behave differently, so say which you have on the form.

03

Living with the work

If the bathroom is the only one in the house, it helps to plan for a few days without it. Some households stay with family, and others make do with a downstairs toilet. Say on the form if the house has just one bathroom, or if anyone in the house has mobility needs, so the plan and the written quote can take that into account from the start.
